Composition thumbs

Hej folks, after a while and some sketches of hair later now a bunch of thumbs. Some are quite alike but I'm very content with two or three of them and definitly will paint these in full scale. I'll create some sketches over the holidays but nothing digital, so no new uploads until next year for you guys.
So to everyone who stumbles along, happy christmas and a good new year, and watch your step.
Until then, fly save.

Unfinished portrait artwork

After some days of work I decided not to finish this for now and try to improve my shading in other ways. I am not content with the colour and general lightning of this one, and it might be better to know when to stop.
As you can see I tried different skin colours and lightning directions, but I could not get it where I want it to be.

The Gateway

This is a re-worked version of a piece I created at the beginning of the year but was not content with since, especially the caravan people in it. I decided to cut them out and change the main focus of the image to birds and animals instead. The sky and colours are also a bit adjusted, and I also changed the left pillar into the same rock formations to widen the view, the rocks are also a bit repainted on this side to make them look a bit more.. rocky, if you guys excuse the word-play. Also another artist helped me out recently and pointed at some lightning issues.

Beneath the Trees

A image which started to collect dust when noah's art camp allready had begun, but now got the time to finish it, actually. Actually, because I didn't expected it. There are still some flaws within the shading and lightning but I've got the overall mood exactly how I had it in mind.

Hope you like it guys.

Material Studies

Material Studies, sheet made by conceptcookie.com

Practice Practice

Did you thought about taking more reference practices today, if not, you should. Since noah's artcamp it became a daily habit and I recommend everyone to try it, if not digital, then on your way to work while sitting in a bus or train, when have to wait for something (or an allready overdue train), use your time. It might be not very exciting but it worth it.
I use different practicing sheets you can found around the net, for example this one of conceptcookie. If you don't have much money to participate in courses (like I do) there are still plenty of free ressources out there and no one stops you from setting yourself deadlines and tasks, or ask friends to do it for you.
Also Charlie Bowater opend a new character design course everyone can join for 20 bucks and will start at the 8th of October. You can find it at skillshare

carrier concept design steps

An unfinished battlecruiser concept, the steps may be interesting to see for some of you. The second step went out exactly right, but went into a complete different direction afterwards.

Noah's Artcamp and Thumbnails

Noah Bradleys artcamp ended these days, which was a great opportunity to get better practice habits and some insights. As far as I know there will be a second artcamp with other training exercises and hopefully other specific topics to cover. For everyone who wasn't in the first one, I really recommend to get into it.As far as it concerned me, Noahs project was really great to get better in art, but not in the usual way. The most tutorials I saw (videos and texts) based on a specific way they teach to follow, mostly a technique or step by step how to.
Noah's idea was a bit different than that. Rounded up, he teached us how to practice and far better, how to keep a mindset of progress and always learning, which is far more important for me than anything else.
I had recreated some professional works very well (as they said), but recreating an existing image is a complete other thing than actually use your knowledge and studies to create a piece by yourself.
Recreating these was a good way to get an insight how other artist think and progress in their images, which might not work for every other artist, but this way doesn't force you to apply any study you did or idea you had, and just teach the pure technical thing.
Noah's camp therefore did the opposite and got me out of the thinking to create perfect images and learn all what I need within the process.
In short, Noah's artcamp just make one point very clear: to study and learn, but (in my case, because I'm damn curious anyway) to practice. When you can't paint something properly, study it, train it, and come back when you are content with what you learnt. But never stop.

If interested, Noah's Artcamp can be found here, and will continue.

Artwork batch

Some more recent works I've created between 2011 and 2013

And as the light switched on, there was text

Because this is the first post ever, a short hi might be appropiate: Hej, the most know me under my alias Anmaril for my artwork and I intend to upload my general artwork and sketchy stuff also here. I allready do this on tumblr, but bloggers just seemed better to actually talk about it, and now here we are. Take a seat, feel yourself at home.

That image is my first ever digitally painted, a map I originally intend to create just to get a feeling for my wacom tablet and ended three months later. It's kinda funny that I finished my latest work with the exact opposite mindset, not to make it perfect.

I will upload more recent images also today to fill the stuff a bit up.
